#167 Time to move on?

After a mass changing of passwords earlier this week, I have come to a big decision, which was to remove my twitter client from my both my computer and my phone. The reason being? I can’t really be bothered with it anymore, and the time spent constantly sifting through peoples updates for something that I might find interesting have shrunk drastically since I started using it two years ago. I will still use it, but I don’t see any point in having something open on my desktop all the time, distracting me from something else I would rather be doing. I’ll check it when I am checking everything else I go on to at the start of the day, and if I feel like it, at the end of the day.

The only exception to this will be my iPad, which will keep Twitteriffic on it since I use that, not so much for doing productive things, but when I am watching tv or the likes. Another site that has fallen foul of this decision is facebook, I don’t exactly use it and the tidy up earlier in the week cemented its fate. Like twitter, I will go on occasionally when I check everything else, but not any other time. I also have to add, that I never had (apart from only a week or so) the fb application on my phone and it has never been on my iPad, because I rarely use it.

As you can see in the screenshot below, no twitter client is present on my iMac.

#142 iPad to PS3

The other day I was thinking, as you do, and it came across me, why can’t you use an idevice such as an iPhone or iPad to control basic functions of a PS3? A bit of a random thought I know, but using one as a remote would give more functionality than a standard controller.

The way I see it would work (and I have googled to see if it has already been done and as far as I’m aware, it hasn’t), is that it would be in app form. It would be loaded up and connect via either bluetooth or wifi to the PlayStation. Almost acting as a secondary display, an XMB (cross media bar) would be displayed on the iPad screen, all the usual gestures would be usable and the functions could be used. It wouldn’t be able to be used to play games with, but it would make sense if it could be used to view images, play music or play video with good playback functionality.

Using the standard PS3 controller for media functions on a PS3 can get a bit confusing, and not many users would be willing to fork out for a specific media remote for it. The number of users who have iDevices is pretty much at 100 million at the moment, and the app would be available to all, and in my opinion, something which could be quite popular.

Here is something I quickly knocked up to show what I mean, even if it just looks as though it is a secondary screen…

#98 Verner Panton

I was looking through some of my old work whilst in the process of tidying up one of my external hard drives, and I came across something which I knew I had but didn’t seem to remember I was all that impressed with. It was a piece of work given to do in the summer between fifth and sixth year for Advanced Higher Product Design. We were each assigned a different product designer and we had to go and write about them but present it on an A3 page. From what I can remember, I was one of the only people to hand this in.

The research I did on Verner Panton has stayed with me through these three and a half years since I did it and I still find work by him very interesting. Every time I see the ‘S’ Chair or the Living Tower, I smile to myself. Was he underrated? quite possibly. But I really do like the work that he did.

Here is my A3 page I did at the time:

#84 100 Ideas: For a Laptop Bag

Along with the scrapbook which we had to produce, a sketchbook of 100 ideas of a laptop bag or case was to be created. The following is what is to be found in my sketchbook.

#83 Scrapbook

This is the scrapbook which accompanies the work which we have carried out in the first five or six weeks in the product design module this semester. It shows the work which we did, ranging from the soft toy penguins which were made to making a glove which had embedded electronics, and a big wad of research at the end of it.
